Ingredients:

9 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced

2½ cups all-purpose flour

½ cup milk

2 egg yolks, 2 egg whites (separated)

2 tablespoons white sugar

1 cup shortening

¾ cup white sugar

½ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

For the icing:

1 ½ cups powdered sugar

Dash of salt

3 tablespoons milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking pan.

Mix flour, 2 tablespoons sugar, and salt in a bowl. Cut in shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Mix egg yolks with ½ cup milk and combine with the flour mixture.

Roll out half the dough to fit the pan. Line the pan with it and brush with egg white.

Arrange sliced apples on the dough. Sprinkle with ¾ cup sugar and cinnamon. Roll out the remaining dough, place it over the apples, and brush with egg white.

Bake for about 35 minutes or until golden.

Whisk together icing ingredients in a small bowl. Drizzle over the cooled bars. Cut into squares.
