Old Fashioned Spiced Bar Cake

An Old Fashioned Spiced Bar Cake is a classic dessert that is rich in warm spices and has a dense, moist texture. Here’s a basic recipe for you to try:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk

Optional Additions:

  • 1 cup chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans work well)
  • 1 cup raisins or chopped dried fruits

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice). Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  1. If you’re using nuts, raisins, or dried fruits, fold them into the batter.
  2. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it evenly.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  4. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
  1. Once the cake is completely cooled, you can optionally frost it with cream cheese frosting or dust it with powdered sugar.

Enjoy your Old Fashioned Spiced Bar Cake!
