Churchs Honey Butter Biscuits

  • 2 cups All-Purpose Flour: The base of our biscuit dough, providing structure.
  • 1 tablespoon Baking Powder: Helps the biscuits rise and become fluffy.
  • 1/2 teaspoon Baking Soda: Works with the baking powder for leavening and tender texture.
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar: Just a touch, to balance the flavors.
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt: Enhances all the flavors in the biscuits.
  • 1/2 cup Unsalted Butter (cold and cubed): Incorporates into the flour to create tender, flaky layers.
  • 3/4 cup Buttermilk (cold): Adds moisture and a slight tang, helping the biscuits rise beautifully.
  • 2 tablespoons Honey: For the dough, giving the biscuits their signature sweetness.
  • 1/4 cup Butter (melted, for brushing): To brush on top of the biscuits before and after baking for extra flavor and shine.
  • 2 tablespoons Honey (for glazing): Mix with melted butter for that irresistible honey butter glaze.

Instructions for Making Church’s Honey Butter Biscuits

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
  2. Combine dry ingredients: In a large bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, and salt.
  3. Cut in the butter: Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, cut the cold cubed butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. The pieces of butter should be pea-sized.
  4. Add wet ingredients: Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the cold buttermilk and 2 tablespoons of honey. Stir until just combined; the dough should be sticky but manageable.
  5. Turn out the dough: Lightly flour a work surface and turn the dough out onto it. Gently fold the dough over itself 2 or 3 times to create layers. Do not overwork the dough.
  6. Cut out biscuits: Pat the dough into a rectangle about 1 inch thick. Using a biscuit cutter or a glass, cut out the biscuits. Do not twist the cutter; press straight down and lift straight up for even rising.
  7. Bake: Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet, ensuring they slightly touch for soft sides. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top.
  8. Prepare the honey butter glaze: While the biscuits are baking, mix the melted butter with 2 tablespoons of honey in a small bowl.
  9. Glaze: As soon as the biscuits come out of the oven, brush them generously with the honey butter glaze. Allow them to cool slightly on the baking sheet before serving.
